Abstract

In Malaysia the policy goal or ;vision; behind the establishment of marine parks is ;to protect conserve and manage in perpetuity; the diverse marine resources within these parks. A marine park on the other hand could provide for preservation if so desired while catering for ecotourism and educational activities within certain defined zones. The link between development and conservation as well as effective management procedures can be a significant draw for ecotourism. Providing ecotourism activities within marine parks could make the public more aware of the importance of marine resources such as coral reefs and the need to prevent their deterioration. The Pulau Payar Marine Park for example has diversity of natural resources and can fulfill the need of ecotourism development. However the question is how establishing marine parks will fulfill these needs. Therefore taking Pulau Payar as an example this paper explores and discusses the contemporary ecotourism aspects and the management in making this island a potential location for ecotourism development.
