Abstract
The main practical objective of this study is to survey the reefs surrounding Pulau Payar collecting data on the distribution and taxonomy of resident sponges. This project will contribute to the Malaysian database on biodiversity. The research work includes the compilation of photographic records on both a macroscopic underwater photographs and microscopic slides of sponge cytology scale which will be used for future taxonomic identification purposes and as a source of reference. In conjunction with the survey work a comprehensive literature review of the biotechnological applications of the chemical and genetic resources of Porifera species is undertaken. Finally in light of the survey findings and literature review the study provides management and conservation recommendations in the context of the National Biodiversity Action Plan of Malaysia regarding Porifera in the Pulau Payar area.
