Abstract

Since the early 1970;s the Department of Fisheries Malaysia has built artificial reefs in Malaysian waters. The program began in the straits of Malacca in the form of closely tied tyre reefs and then progressed to pyramid modules. This study was carried out to determine the effectiveness of the artificial reefs deployed and the fish standing stock in its vicinity. The reefs observed in Pulau Payar were of tyres concrete culverts scuttled boat reefs and laminated concrete pillars. The reefs were ideal for study as they were not disturbedby fishing activity and could be used as an indicator of processes that happen in other artificial reefs. The fish standing stock at tyre reefs were observed to be the highest compared to the other artificial reef forms. Resident type fishes for example Epinephalus sp. Any pherodon leucogrammicus Zanclus sp. and Heniochus sp. were abundant at the artificial reef structure. Other fishes such as the lutjanids were observed to roam the reefs for food and protection. Colonisation of artificial reefs was observed to depend on depth and total suspended solid level. Scleractinian corals and soft corals were observed to colonise the shallow artificial reefs but not the deeper and sediment covered tyres.
