Abstract
The last few decades of the 20th century had seen tremendous growth in health concerns among the populace. Stimulated by an increasing awareness in health promotion traditional medicines and natural products have found their ways to urban settings. While women continue to resort to traditional therapies offered in the villages they now can easily find them in shops and commercial centers which not only provide body massages and healing products but also facial treatment. Undoubtedly women;s needs to maintain their health and enhance their beauty have been the driving force in the rise of the Malaysian herbal industries. It is obvious that the trend in health and beauty care seeking behavior among Malay women is influenced by social economic and cultural factors. Most noticeably is the role of both print and electronic media in promoting the use of health and beauty products. This paper will present the philosophy behind women;s use of health and beauty products viewed from the perspectives of service and product providers as reflected in advertisements in some local women;s magazines and on the Internet. Some women;s responses with regard to their practice and views are also included.
