Abstract

Recently there has been an increased interest in natural antioxidants from plants to substitute synthetic antioxidants due to their various adverse effects. Natural antioxidants fight free radicals and keep the oxidative stress state in balance thus preventing oxidative related degenerative diseases and aging symptoms. In FRIM various medicinal plants and local crops were tested for antioxidant activities and skin whitening properties using bioassays i.e. Autoxidation of Linoleic Acid in a Water-Alcohol System that evaluates the lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity; Xanthine/Xanthine Oxidase Superoxide Scavenging System that evaluates the scavenging activity on biological free radicals; DPPH Radical Scavenging System that evaluates the reducing activity that determines the antioxidant potential; and Tyrosinase Inhibitory System that evaluates the inhibitory activity on melanin biosynthesis resulting in skin whitening properties. Among the various plants tested seven plants were found to possess high antioxidant activity 70 i.e. kadok Piper sarmentosum ulam raja Cosmos caudatus pegaga Centella asiatica kesum Polygonum minus selom Oenanthe javanica cemumar Micromelum pubescens and beluntas Pluchea indica. Five plants were found to possess skin whitening properties 50 i.e. jambu batu Psidium guajava manggis Garcinia mangostana gajus Anacardium occidentale manjakani Quercus infectoria and beluntas Pluchea indica. These plants were developed into Natural Antioxidant Standardised Extracts NASE and Natural Antioxidant Skin Whitening Standardised Extracts NASSE using standardized extraction protocols and safety tests. These standardized extracts were further developed into cosmeceutical and neutraceutical natural products with the joint collaboration of herbal manufacturing companies. Some of the products developed were skin whitening face cream cleanser mask toner foam moisturizer and talcum.
