Abstract

This paper gives an overview on historical development of the building regulations and timber construction in Malaysia. It includes the development of the building by-laws, starting from colonial by-laws, and the misinterpretation of the by-laws in preparing/drafting Malaysia Codes related to building construction. Also highlighted in the paper are the misconceptions on timber for building and the need and how to correct the misconceptions by the lay public, the professional architects, engineers, contractors, etc.
