Abstract

A search of the data on the import of tropical prawns by USA UK Australia and New Zealand has revealed a tightening of bacteriological standards by these countries. In the USA during 1979 60 million US dollars of imported prawns were subjected to detainment while in UK around 19 of Malaysian prawns were rejected in 1977. Tropical prawns however have not been implicated as a significant cause of food poisoning in importing countries. The bacteriological standards for cooked peeled prawns vary widely among importing countries. Some standards are almost impossible to achieve given the high counts on tropical prawns at the time of catching and the intimate physical handling which cooked prawns receive in Asian countries. A case is made for more uniform bacteriological standards based on I. C. M. S. F. recommendations.
