Abstract

In Thailand durian was once difficult to cultivate. Fruit availability was limit and price was not affordable for many. However as a result of research and development the cultivation of durian became easily attainable Yield increased tremendously resulting in over production and loss to the farmer in recent vears. Currently export of durian is mostly limit to nearby countries since its storage life is only 2 weeks. Handling system has been improved for faster delivery. Steps are being used to ensure better quality such as sorting and fungicidal dipping. However the handling procedure is still too slow involving as much as 11 steps from harvesting to packaging. Extensive loss of exported durian remained. A survey revealed that main loss was due to immature fruit being shipped or fruits are rotten at the destination. Current research is focused on developing mechanical harvesting aid handing equipments and management sorting and storage technique. More importantly it is identified that the establishment of strong and efficient farmer cooperative is essential.
