Abstract

Environmental toxicology is becoming more popular in Malaysia due to increase awareness on the harmful effects of pollutants from industrial activities on living organisms including plant animals and humans. The information from toxicity studies can be used to assess the risks associated with the occurrence of these pollutants in the environment. Macroinvertebrates that have been commonly used as test organisms include crustaceans mollusks worms and insects. Among the vertebrates fish has been regularly used. In our study species of the aquatic insect chironomid Diptera: Chironomidae were tested for suitability for use as test organisms in aquatic and sediment toxicity tests. Four selected heavy metals cadmium copper nickel and lead were used in the aquatic tests. Serials concentrations of 5 mg/L 10 mg/L 20 mg/L 35 mg/L 65 mg/L and 100 mg/L were prepared in order to determine the median lethal concentration LC50 of each metal towards the chironomid larvae. For the sediment toxicity tests contaminated sediment samples were collected at several polluted rivers in Penang. Mortality data were recorded for both tests. The results of these tests will be discussed.
