Abstract

Biosorption can be used as a cost effective and efficient technique for the removal of toxic heavy metals from wastewater. Durian Durio zibethinus rind is regarded as food waste. This study tested durian rind pectin DRP and modified durian rind pectin mDRP as biosorbent for removals of toxic heavy metals PbII CdII CuII ZnII and NiII and compared the effectiveness of the durian products with commercial products citrus pectin CP and modified citrus pectin MCP. In general the order of removal of heavy metals by all biosorbents was CuII PbII NiII Zn CdII. Except for the removal of PbII the order of effectiveness of heavy metal removal of the biosorbents was MCP mDRP CP DRP. The results obtained through the study suggest that DRP and mDRP are favorable sorbers that should be considered for sorption and removal of heavy metal from waste water.
