Haliza Abdul Aziz, . and Zainab Idris, . (2007) Milder process for the production of palm-based esterquats. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Quaternized fatty acid triethanolamine esters or esterquats are cationic surfactants which are more preferred nowadays because of their excellent biodegradability than the traditional quats that have unfavourable biodegradation characteristics. Moreover palm-based esterquats derived from a vegetable and renewable-based feedstock are generally more accepted by many people than the animal-based raw materials. In view of this promising development the process to produce palm-based esterquats had been scaled up from laboratory scale to a 25kg per batch pilot plant. A closer view on a milder technology methyl ester route to produce esterquats replacing the earlier fatty acid route shall be highlighted in this poster. The methyl ester route improves the efficiency as well as reduces the batch processing time. The properties of the palm-based esterquats produced are comparable to tallow-based commercial esterquats. One major application of esterquats is in the textile industry where they are used as an active ingredient for fabric softeners.
