Abstract

Chemical synthesis of low viscosity and light-coloured fatty acid based polyol was conducted via three-steps reaction. The reactions variables namely temperature pressure catalyst amount molar ratio of reactants and reaction time were investigated for their effect on the properties of the final polyol produced. Temperature and vacuum pressure were found to have impact on the rate of the first reaction step which was an esterification reaction. In the second reaction step which was an epoxidation reaction mole ratio of reactants and reaction time crucial role in determining the properties of the final product. The final reaction step was an alcoholysis where catalyst amount was one ofthe important factors that affect the final properties. Depending on the reaction for this three-steps reaction acid based polyols with various properties could be prepared. However polyols with low viscosity and light colour was preferred because they have properties that are suitable for the production of 2K polyurethane for the CASE industries.
