Buildings are one of the highest energy consumers in a developed country contributing to 40 to 45 of energy consumption and releasing significant amounts of carbon dioxide emissions. In Malaysia buildings accounts for about 20 of the production of green house gases GHG the third after transportation and industries. In order for Malaysia to rectify this there must be a clear path in the future towards producing green buildings by following a set of measures to adopt green performance criteria and ratings. Malaysia has yet to develop a rating system for building designers and professionals to adhere to by following examples from other countries. This paper shares the research on the practice of hotels in Malaysia which shows a serious disregard on the aspect of green and sustainable issues. It also outlines on the need to develop performance ratings for green buildings in the country which provides key indicators for designers to fulfil and used as guideline tools for authorities and the law enforcement agencies such as planning and building approval authorities to enforce and evaluate the execution of green performance buildings on the ground.
