Abstract

Highland landscape is significant due to the tourism implication. Scenic beauty and recreational opportunities are the assets that lure tourists to the landscape. This study addressed tourists; preferences for scenic landscapes of Cameron Highlands. The study sample size was 439 units which was obtained from a sample pool of 560 units. The respondents were tourists to Cameron Highlands. A photo survey was used to determine the tourists; preferences for highland scenes. A total of 12 photos printed in colour on A3 paper was presented to the respondents. The respondents were asked to rank the scene in each photo using ranking 1-12; rank 1 was the most preferred while rank 12 was the least preferred. Percentage and frequency statistics were used to determine the tourists; preferences for different types of scenes. Results indicate that the scene of a tea plantation land use was at rank I while the scene of a commercial land use was at rank 12. These findings have implication to the local authorities because the results can help them identifying the appropriate highland management practices. Highland management decisions are important in order to establish good management practices. Further only good management practices can sustain and flourish the tourism industry here. So decisions on managing the landscape of Cameron Highlands must not involve the local authorities alone but certainly need participation from the publics.
