Abstract

Cluster analysis CA and descriptive statistics were used for analyzing water quality data obtained from Juru Estuary in the Penang state of Malaysia. Ten parameters Temperature pH Dissolved oxygen DO Conductivity Turbidity Total Suspended Solids TSS Nitrate Phosphate Chemical Oxygen demand COD and Biochemical Oxygen Demand BOD were measured. Samples were collected from ten sampling locations distributed along the estuary. CA grouped all 10 sampling sites into four statistically significant clusters. Descriptive statistics showed that some parameters exhibited a high spread during sampling times such as COD and TSS. Correlation analysis revealed that some parameters exhibited a strong relationship which indicates that these parameters shared the common source of origin. This paper illustrate the usefulness of using statistical techniques in analyzing environmental data to get better understanding of the behavior of different parameters.
