Abstract

Part of Pinang River Basin is located in the most urbanized area in Penang Island and the major river that flows through is Pinang River. This river is known as one of the most polluted rivers in Malaysia. For years the water quality of Pinang River and its tributaries have been atrociously downgraded and awfully affected the environment and the ecosystem surrounding the river. A study has been conducted to evaluate the selected parameters DO BODs COD and TSS in aqueous phase collected at ten sampling points within the catchments. The analysis shows that the water quality at each sampling point within Pinang River Basin varied in the following ranges; DO: 0.60-3.89 BODs: 0.97-10.97 COD: 2.00-1175.00 and TSS: 0-428 mg/L respectively. Further investigations on the sources of river pollution of each area were perfonned and point sources and non-point sources are identified.
