Abstract

The present study was conducted from May 2005 to December 2006 to evaluate the water quality status of drinking water from Batu Ferringhi Treatment Plant in Penang. Some physico-chemical parameters including pH electrical conductivity EC turbidity nutrients NH3-N NO3-N NO2-N and PO4-P and heavy metals including cadmium chromium copper lead and zinc were determined. The results showed that nitrite recorded the lowest concentrations among all the nutrients and the concentrations of phosphate during this study were lower than ammonia and nitrate concentrations. The heavy metal ions concentrations in drinking water occurs in descending order of Zn Cu Pb Cr Cd and small enough in quantities to be considered as trace elements. The results of EC pH and turbidity levels were quite acceptable as they were still below the minimum levels set by the standards of the World Health Organization WHO and Ministry of Health Malaysia MOH for drinking water. The available data indicate that at Batu Ferringhi Treatment Plant the drinking water is safe fit and suitable to drink based on the results of all the studied physico-chemical parameters whose values were within the recommended standards.
