Abstract

The water quality of Air Itam Dam and two small streams near the dam upper-and down-streams was analyzed from May 2006 to February 2007. The water quality index WQI is used to classify water quality as excellent good medium bad and very bad. The index ranges from 0 to 100 where a 100 represents an excellent water quality condition. Water samples were collected monthly from three sites in the dam and two sites in the streams and six parameters were analyzed namely dissolved oxygen DO biological oxygen demand BOD chemical oxygen demand COD ammonia-N AN total suspended solids TSS and pH. We found that the WQI was around 92-93 in the dam;s sampling sites which corresponds to excellent and good and it decreased to around 91-88 in the two small streams indicating that these streams were classified as good quality. These classifications showed that the dam and the streams were in a very low level of pollution.
