Abstract
The article gives a systematic description of the title. In Pakistan although an agricultural based country there had not been a systematic approach to animal production for meat until recently when a realisation was made to this effect. So far the main use of the cattle and buffalo has been for milk and as draft animals respectively. Pakistan supports almost all types of animals except pigs. Lamb sheep and goat meat is the most popular in their order. Secondary importance to beef is both due to its inferior quality and partly may be the result of living together with predominant Hindu society non beef eaters in United India for centuries until Pakistan was born in 1947. She needs changes towards development in the handling distribution grading ante-and post-mortem inspection of meat and the public awareness regarding the importance of animal proteins in the diet. There is need to develop products tailored to the local taste and suitable to the climate for their keeping quality i.e. low water low pH. This could lead to significant rise in the consumption of animal proteins. The cooking methods for meat curries need evaluation and if required a systematic approach should be made towards their modification for nutritive reasons. Buffalo should and would play an important role in the meat and milk supply situation of the subcontinent India Pakistan Bangladesh with improvement in the economic status of the average farmer. Presently most animals are being fed on agricultural wastes which also limits introduction of improved stock.
