Abstract

Oriented strand boards were manufactured from Malaysian oil palm stem. In the manufacture of strand boards at three target densities melamine-phenol -formaldehyde resin was used as adhesive. Vascular bundles from oil palm stems were mainly used for the face layers ofthe boards and for the core layers a mixture ofparenchymatous material and strands were used. The boards with densities of 500 600 and 700 kg/m3 meet the Japanese Industrial stands JIS 5908 for oriented strand board and random strand boards. Oriented strand boards showed from 35 to 45 increase in bending strength in comparison with random strand boards. All boards met the specifications in water soak test and boiling test for P-Type board.
