Abstract
Biomass in the form of oil palm empty fruit bunches were pyrolysed in a laboratory-scale pyrolyser which was externally heated by a muffle furnace. Based on the data obtained a pilot kiln with length of 114 em and diameter of76 em was constructed. However it was operated with internal heating to reduce the energy input. Pyrolysis runs were performed at a terminal temperature of 600C with a heating rate of about 5C min-l and the emissions from the process were condensed. The products were mainly solid char EFB char and the condensates separated into a tarry fraction EFB oil and an aqueous fraction EFB vinegar. EFB char with 66.89 fixed carbon and a calorific value of 27.10 MJ kg; was obtained. The empirical formula of the EFB oil with a calorific value of 31.44 MJ kg; was established as CHI.4Po.24No.03; Numerous chemical compounds were found in the EFB vinegar with acetic acid and phenols being the main constituents.
