Abstract
A wide range of timber species and wood-based panel products are suitable for studs and facing materials in the fabrication of wall and partitioning systems. These timber studs and wood-based partitions have great potential for use in multi-storey and high-rise buildings provided they comply with the fire resistance requirements specified in the Uniform Building By-laws, 1984. The fire resistance of the partitions has been evaluated by full-scale fire resistance test at FRIM since 1987. The fire performance behaviour of non-load bearing kempas (Koompassia malaccensis) timber stud partitions using various thicknesses of cement-bonded particleboard was evaluated using 3 x 3 m gas-fired furnace by fire tests following a temperature-time requirement specified in the British Standard, BS 476:Part 22. The fire resistance ratings of the partitions depended on the thickness of the cement-bonded particleboards. During the test, the temperature on the unexposed sides of the partitions was recorded. The temperature on the unexposed side of the partitions was reduced when fibre insulating material was used to fill the cavity of the partitions. An additional layer of 16 mm thick gypsum board in the inner layer of the system improved insulation and fire resistance rating to 120 min.
