Abstract
The mechanical and physical properties ofhybrid medium density fibreboard MDF from oil palm empty fruit bunch fibres OPEFB and rubberwood RW were investigated. MDF were produced in different weight ratios ofRW: OPEFB 50:50 and 80:20. The board was storage at three different relative humidity RH with fixed temperature at 20C. The relative humidity were at 93 65 and ambient condition as a control element average temperature: 23C -33C and average RH: 64 -80. The effect of storage time and relative humidity ofMDF was assessed by measuring the changes ofthe board properties for 2 month at two week interval time period. The mechanical flexure test was analyzed. While the physical test were thickness swelling TS and water absorption WA. The result showed that a slight reduction of flexure strength of the panel with increased the time storage. Possible mechanisms behind this reduction are discussed. While the value ofTS and WA increased by increasing oftime storage. The storage ofboard at 65 RH showed to have lower effect on the dimensional stability ofthe panel. While storage of panel at 93 RH exhibited a decreased in the dimensional stability of board with the increased of TS and WA. It was also observed that the samples produced with 80 RW and 20 EFB had higher mechanical and physical properties as compared to MDF with 50 RW and 50 EFB.
