Abstract

Oil Palm Trunk OPT has its own characteristic compared to wood. OPT like other lignosellulosic material is also hygroscopic. Properties on the affinity of OPT for organic liquid were investigated. Samples were submerged in organic liquid in a pressurized chamber for one hour to improve the penetration of organic liquids and then left soaked in various organic liquid for 30 days. The organic liquid were changed twice a month to ensure the purity. After 30 days the samples were re-measured again. The results indicated that radial swelling of OPT is higher compared to tangential swelling while the axial swelling is considered negligible. OPT swell higher in solvent with low molecular weight compared to those with higher molecular weight.
