Abstract

The high achievement of oil palm breeding in Indonesia is mainly supported by the availability of superior germplasm. One of the germplasm is SP540 a pisifera introduced from Zaire in 1921 and planted in Sungai Pancur 1923. The excellent general combining ability of SP540 was proved by breeders not only in Indonesia but also in other countries. To date the SP540-derived pisifera is one of the main resources for advancing IOPRI breeding programs i.e. the family and individual palm selection FIPS program and the reciprocal recurrent selection RRS program. For the FIPS program the general combining ability of SP540-derived pisifera was tested with some origins of Deli dura and dumpy dura and was reviewed in 1993 in PIPOC Hutomo and Pamin 1993. Some of SP540-derived pisiferas renamed as RS Rispa lineage have also been evaluated in many progeny trials af IOPRI-RRS program. The update result of the IOPRI-RRS trials by using SP540-derived pisifera as male parent and the future vision for the role of the SP540-derived germplasm will be presented in this seminar.
