Abstract
In Peninsular Malaysia a large percentage of flue-season tobacco is cultivated in areas having a distinct dry areas of Kelantan/ Terengganu and paddy alluvial areas of Kedah/Perlis. Sandy Bris soils have low water holding capacity low organic matter content and are inherently infertile. Irrigation is required to ensure adequate moisture for tobacco cultivation. MARDI research showed that tobacco yield up to 2500 kg/ha could be obtained from an irrigation crop grown on Bris Soil. The present irrigation systems used in tobacco cultivation are sprinkler rain-gun and furrow. The current trend is to use sprinklers for tobacco crop grown on sandy soils. Encouraged are prepared to install more sophisticated irrigation equipment in the future.
