Abstract

The macadamia nut is the only Australian native plant crop to be developed as a commercial world food. While the original development of the industry has occurred in Hawaii the production of nut-in-shell NIS from Australian orchards surpassed that produced in Hawaii for the first time in 1995. This has occurred through a concentrated effort by the Australian industry which has supported research into various aspects of production processing and marketing. The industry is now one of the most efficient horticultural enterprises in Australia with current production of about 19 OOOt of NIS per year which is estimated to reach 40 OOOt by 2005. The value of the industry is estimated at about 100m with about 30 of production sold on the local market and 70 exported to Europe Japan Asia and the United States of America. This paper discusses the development of the industry from a hobby industry to one of Australia;s premier horticultural industries of the 1990;s.
