Abstract
Through a series of experiments on broodstock culture and larval rearing using static greenwater system at Can Tho University since a998 a protocol on seed production of giant freshwater prawn was developed and applied into commercial production practice in the Mekong Delta. By 1999 there was only one hatchery with production of less than 1 million of postlarvae in the region. Recently there are totally 90 hatcheries in the Mekong Delta producing 150 millions postlarvae yearly. More details on technologies and economics of prawn hatchery in the region are also discussed in the paper. With supply of hatchery reared postlarvae prawn farming is developing rapidly in region.
