Abstract

Studies on the early ontogeny from fertilised egg until post-larval stages of giant Malaysian prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii were carried out. Approximately 40 to 50 fertilised egg samples were removed from the brood chamber of a berried female. The embryonic and larval developments were observed in the laboratory at a mean water temperature of 25C 1 C salinity of 14 ppt and pH 7. The larvae were fed with Artemia salina enriched Artemia and egg custart while the postlarvae were fed with commercial pellets. The matured eggs were bright orange in colour and slowly turned gray before hatched. The embryonic development and different larval stages with 11 molts having distinct morphological differences are described. The post-larval stage was first observed 29 days after hatching.
