Abstract
A study was carried out to determine the effects of 17a-methyl testosterone on giant fresh waterprawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii larval stages and grow-out phase. Prawn larvae were administrated with the hormone starting from stage VI to post lavae through feeding. There different dosages exposed were 10mg/kg 50mg/kg and there was no treatment for the control. The larval growth and survival rates were not significantly different P0.05between treatments and control during the larviculture period. In the subsequent study the same post larvae that administrated with the respective androgen hormone and the control were used to study the reproductive performance growth and survival in the grow-out pond. Prawns had similar growth rate in the 1st and 2nd month of culture for all the treatments and the control. All prawns exhibited normal growth rate and there was no barried female prawn observed until the second month of culture. In the 3rd month of culture berried female constituted of 12 from the total female population in the control pond while 3 3 and 2 for treatments 10 50 and 100mg/kg respectively. The number of barried females was increased in the 4th month of the culture period in which the control ones were significantly higher than all the other treatments. A percentage of 16 15 12 and 24 of barried females were recorded with prawn treated with androgen 10 50 100mg/kg and the control respectively. However control prawn exhibition better growth rate thoughout the culture period and survival rates were similar between control and treatments. No deformed prawns were observed for both the larviculture and grow out study. The present study indicated that exposure of 17a-methyl testosterone in the larval stages has no affect on the growth and survivals of prawn although effect of the reproductive performance need to be studied further.
