Abstract

The responses of growth flowering and water relations to root pruning were investigated on starfruitAverrhoa carambola L plants grown under field conditions. Root pruning was performed by cutting 25 50 and 75 of roots from plants grown in cement culvert. Throughout the experimental period. the plants received a considerably high rainfall. Reduction in leaf and root dry weight occured when 50 or more roots were pruned from the plants. There was an elevated increase in flower production with 50 and 75 root pruning. The reduction in leaf water potential of root pruned plants was temporary recovering as growth progressed after treatment and depended on the rainfall pattern.
