Abstract
In Carambola Averrhoa carambola L. a species with heteromorphic self incompatibility system the distinction between compatible and incompatible pollen tubes takes place in the stigmatic and stylar tissues. While compatible pollen tubes traversed the whole length of the stylar tissue after 24 h of pollination in a thrum gynoecia the incompatible pollen tubes were inhibited at the upper stylar tissues close to the stigma-style interface when selfed or intramorph pollinated. With a pin gynoecia incompatible pollen tubes were inhibited at mid-length of the stylar tissue or they traversed the whole length of the style when selfed or intramorph pollinated depending on the clonal materials. In addition to the differences in inhibition sites of incompatible pollen tubes numerous ancillary morphological polymorphisms between these two morphs were also observed. Pin pollen grains were round while thrum pollen grain was oblong in shape. The receptive surface of the cob stigma was larger in pin than in thrum flowers. Protein profiles in various floral organs were also found to be different between the pin and thrum morphs.
