Abstract
Fruit flies Diptera: Tephritidae are a group of insect pests that are major pests of horticultural industries in practically all countries around the world in which they occur. Besides inflicting heavy losses in the field infestation by fruit flies also restricts the free trade and export of fruits. The southeast Asian and the Asian region have a diversity of pest species that pose many obstacles to the successful development of tropical fruit industries in the region. Despite the severity of the problem several strategies and control techniques can be adopted to minimize infestation by fruit flies. These along with various other issues that have to be reckoned with in order to enable an export oriented tropical fruit industry to prosper are discussed in this paper.
