Abstract
Heating rates were determined at different areas in cucumber banana apple mango and avocado using microwave energy generated from a commercial microwave oven. Power delivered to the load was 3 16.5 watt of a total available power of 630 watt. Fiberoptic sensors measured temperatures at the seed center seed surface midway in the pulp and under the peel. Regardless if the product was spherical like an apple or elongate like a cucumber temperatures increased from the center outward to the peel. Knowing which areas of a product reach a temperature lethal for a specific pest and knowing the time when the target temperature is reached are data researchers use to develop methods to control pests and reduce commodity damage.
