Abstract

Several agrochemical-free postharvest treatments were tried on papaya fruits to control postharvest fungal diseases especially anthracnose Colletotrichum gloeosporioides C. capsici which had the highest frequency of occurrence. Postharvest hot water dipping single dip at 54.40C for 3 min or double dip at 420C for 30 min. transferred within 3 min to 490 C for 20 min reduced anthracnose by more than 30. Dipping fruits in a 0.2 aqueous solution of papaya latex reduced anthracnose by 35. The latex treatment was more effective when combined with the double dip hot water treatment. This combined treatment reduced anthracnose by 72. In vitro studies showed that hot water markedly reduced viability of conidia of several postharvest fungal pathogens of papaya. Papaya latex which possesses proteolytic activity disintegrated them completely. Latex also gave a shiny protective layer to the fruit surface. The combined treatment could therefore be recommended not only to reduce disease but also to improve the appearance of fruits.
