Abstract
India is situated in semi tropics having advantage of producing a variety of crops. It is the second largest producer of fruits next to Brazil in the world. But some how the production of processed fruits account only 1.1 of the world production hence India stands far behind in exporting the fruits and processed fruit products in International market. There are several factors influence the lower amount of processing the fruits and capturing the high trend in exporting the processed products in the world market. Under the present scenario of liberalization policy of Indian Government more emphasis is given on export oriented processed fruit products. The growers are being provided technical inputs and hybrid seeds to boost the production and processors are being given needed facilities to improve the infrastructure of processing plants to enhance the production of processed fruit products to meet the quality standard of the international market. The mission oriented efforts to capture the international market would yield a very positive result in near future for what the India is aiming for. This paper critically examines the drawbacks in the present system of production and processing of fruits in India concentrated efforts to overcome the problems and future perspectives of production and processing industries of fruits in the country.
