Abstract

Nine Formosan sika deer Cercus nippon taiouanus stags farmed in southern Taiwan 22.5N 120.5E 5 of 3 years and 4 were 2 years in age were allotted to investigate the semen characteristics gross morphometry associated with the breeding characteristics and the effect of sex maturity. Results showed that the major breeding period was from October to January the next year for the hard antler stage HAS. The best quality of semen volume SV 1.06ml total sperm count per ejaculation TCSE; 121.94x10 7 neck girth NG and testicular volume TV were during the major breeding period but it was reversed for the live body weight LBW. Appearance of semen was yellow and viscose during the major breeding period. The older the stags the higher the semen concentration SC during the sperm production period and the earlier the casting loss of the sperm production occurred more significantly than the younger deer P0.01. Change of TCSE was positively and significantly related to the TV SV and sperm motility score SMS. It is concluded that the Formosan sika deer stags exhibited the best semen quality NG and TV during the major breeding period. The semen quality of the stags 3 years were better than the 2 year old stags at the hard antler stage.
