Abstract

Biomass in specific lignocellulosic is one of the promlsmg renewable sources. Utilizing lignocellulosic biomass may be able to mitigate the CO2 emission and fossil fuel depletion problems. Biomass center ofUTP is focusing on how to utilize lignocellulosic biomass in Malaysia as energy and chemical resources. Firstly background of biomass utilization including biomass potential and energy consumption in Malaysia and the conversion technologies available will be introduced. Then two technologies i.e. torrefaction and fast pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass will be discussed as a technology of the near future.
