Abstract

As a major palm oil producing country Malaysia generates abundant amount of oil palm biomass. Oil palm stems are found abundantly in the plantation after harvesting the fruit bunches. In view to utilize this biomass the present paper aims to reveal the slow pyrolysis of oil palm leaf stem in the temperature range of 300 to 500C. This was carried out in a stainless steel fixed bed reactor. Results showed linear increase in yield of liquid product against the increasing temperature. However the highest liquid yield of 58 wt was obtained at 500 C. Liquid product was subjected to FT-IR analysis to detect possible chemical bounds. The calorific value of char was about 28 MJ/kg which can serve as bio-char or alternative heating source in many applications. In conclusion the critical temperature was found to be 400C where the yield and colour of liquid product changes drastically.
