Abstract

Wheat Triticum aestivum has been known as temperate cereal. Malaysia has been importing Wheat for human and animal consumption. In 1996 Malaysia has imported 1.09 robusta miilion tonnes of wheat with the current value of more than RMl billion. To reduce import bill and promote the growth of related industries the possibility of growing wheat locally has to the been investigated. Seven wheat lines provided by CIMMYT were evaluated for their ability to grow and produce seeds in two screening. From the screening study 3 potential lines IBN23 IBN26 and IBN28 were identified. The mean total seed weight produce per plant by the lines were 5.9 4.9 and 3.7 gm respectively. Results from this initial study indicated that wheat can be grown successfully in Malaysia and future research will focus on seed yield and quality for this purpose more lines from CIMMYT and Bangladesh will be screened.
