Abstract
Study on the rooting performance of poinsettia terminal cuttings with six concentrations of indole-3-butyric acid IBA 0 1000 2000 3000 4000 and 5000 mg.rl. The experimental design used was a Complete Rmdomized Design CRD with 6 replications of 10 cuttings each. Cuttings were propagated in 1 vermiculite and 1 peat v/v. The basal ends of the cuttings were dipped to 1.0-2.0 cm in IBA for 15-20 seconds and air-dried. Cuttings were than planted in the rooting medium under mist. Rooted cuttings were harvested 5 weeks after planting for data collection. Rooting percentage root length root number root ball diameter and root dry weight were measured. The origin of the root primordia was determined by histological studies. IBA at 1000 mg.r l gave the best rooting percentage 91.67. Concentration of 1000 mg.r l IBA also gave the largest root ball diameter highest root dry weight longest root and the most number of roots. Histological studies showed that the root primordia originated from the cambial zone. Poinsettia can be categorised as an easy to root species since rooting occurs between 8-12 days after planting
