Abstract

Highly weathered soils in the tropics are acidic. The soils contain high amounts of exchangeable AI and deficient in Ca and/or Mg which limit crop growth. Our study aimed at determining the reactions taking place in the soils and to evaluate the effectiveness of dolomitic limestone GML and gypsum as soil acidity ameliorants. The study showed that there was clear evidence to indicate the accumulation of Cainthezone of limeapplication. Subsoil Ca deficiency can be alleviated by applying limestone together with gypsum. Gypsum can be used to ameliorate Oxisols having high amounts of oxides but not recommended to ameliorate Ultisols having high exchangeable AI. Gypsum application onto the Oxisols can increase soil pH and negative charge via replacement of OH- by SO42-.
