Abstract

Solution culture experiments were conducted to determine toxic level of Mn concentration for the growth of vegetable soybean. In the first experiment 9 levels of Mn concentration in the nutrient solution were used 0 60 120 240 300 360 420 and 480 uM Mn. The plant growth was found to be retarded when Mn level reached 180 uM; by the third week the plants died. Symptoms of Mn toxicity occurred at 60 uM when plant dry weight decreased. In the second experiment the levels of Mn concentration were 0 7.5 15 22.5 30 37.5 45 52 S and 60 uM. Toxic level of Mn for plant tissues dry weight was at Mn concentration 6 uM. Young leaf tended to be more sensitive to Mn toxicity than the middle and old leaf. Chlorophyll contents in the young leaf and middle leaf were maximum at the 24 uM and 25 uM Mn concentration respectively.
