Abstract

Hydroxyapatite HA CalOP046OHh is known as a biocompatible material due to its resemblance to bone mineral in chemical and crystal structure. HA can be produced by several methods by using calcium and phosphate sou1t:es. Different reactant materials were found to give different properties ofHA such as grain size crystallinity. and mechanical st1;fngth. Baling limestone and Simpang Pulai limestone were used in this study to synthesize HA via wet precipitation method. The synthesised HA was then characterised using X-ray Diffractometer XRD for phase identification Pycnometerfor density measuremen t X-ray Fluorescence XRF for chemical composition analysis Fourier TransjOnn Infra Red FTlR for c-o bond and Universal Testing Machine UTM for compression st1;fngth. The XRD results demonstrate d that both Baling and Simpang Pulai limestones can be used to synthesize high purity HA. The results also showed that HA produced from Baling limestone has better potential due to its higher compression strength 61.10 MPa compared to Simpang Pulai limestone 42.17 MPa.
