Abstract

Several studies exist in the literature demonstrating cardioprotective ability of tocotrienol-rich factor (TRF) derived from palm oil. Numerous reports exist to show various health benefits of tocotrienols, isomers of vitamin E. In acute experiments, pre-perfusion of the isolated rat hearts with TRF was associated with improved post-ischemic ventricular function, reduced myocardial infarct size and decreased number of apoptotic cardiomyocytes, and reduced electrical rhythm disturbances compared to control. The diet supplemented with TRF for 7 days also exhibited improved ventricular recovery and reduced myocardial infarct size, the recovery was further enhanced after 15 days of TRF consumption. Interestingly, TRF inhibited the phosphorylation of c-Src and stabilized proteasome. It appears that inhibition of ischemia/reperfusion-mediated c-Src activation and proteasome stabilization play a crucial role for the cardioprotective ability of TRF.
