Abstract

The carbonation of calcium hydroxide slurry is a widely and commercially used method for producing PCC. Using this method high grade limestone is needed to produce high grade PCC. Our previous research showed that high grade PCC could be produced from low/medium grade starting material. This could be done by using pregnant solution of calcium hydroxide or lime water for carbonation process instead Of using slurry with up to 30 solid by weight. In the conventional practice carbonation of slurry was carried out by batches in a huge tank at one time top roduce PCC. It is not practical to carry out carbonation of lime water by batches. Assuming the solubility of CaOH is about I.5g/L the amount of PCC that could be produced if using the same size of tank is almost 300 times lesser. For feasible production of pcc from pregnant solution continuous carbonation process is needed instead of batches carbonation. Mineral Research Centre has designed a prototype reactor for continuous carbonation process. This paper describes the concept of prototype reactor and several tests that had been done to evaluate the performance of this reactor in carrying out continuous carbonation process of pregnant solution of calcium hydroxide.
