Abstract
Past results indicated that many types of cash crops and vegetables flourished in ex-mining ponds pH between 5.5 and 6.8 using Surface Water Planting System SPAK technique. Some ex-mining ponds produce acidic water and contain heavy metals which could contaminate the ponds and pollute its surrounding. SPAK which was successfully tested in non-acidic ponds has been readapted for tests in an acidic mine ponds AMP associated with acid mine drainage AMD problems. Different plants have different affinity for heavy metals absorption. This paper discussed some of the results obtained from two selected plant species namely Orthosiphon Stamines Misai Kucing and Typha Latifolia commonly found in wetland areas planted in an acidic ex-mining pond with pH less than 4.5 using SPAK. Some guidelines on surface water farming in ex-mining ponds are briefly mentioned in this paper.
