Sequencing the oil palm genome: the beginning

Abstract

For the past decades genomics research at MPOB was based on phenotype-driven sort of investigation with limited genome knowledge. Discoveries of markers and genes were likened to looking for them in a genome haystack. The emergence of new generation sequencing technologies has resulted in more affordable and rapid sequencing regimes. This also means more and more genomes will be sequenced in time to come. This paper will showcase MPOB;s efforts in sequencing the oil palm genome. In most genome projects obtaining the sequence information is merely the first step towards decoding the blueprint of life. Whole-genome sequencealoneis of little utility unless it is supplemented with high-quality annotation. The next phase would be to capture the wealth of information through the integration of knowledge of the genome structure and evolution gene architecture and structural elements controlling transcription derived from known gene sequences. Increasing the resolution of the genome structure through genetic mapping will be crucial to the accurate annotation of the sequence database. Functional genomics efforts including the design of whole-genome microarrays and large-scale knock-out knock-in mutagenesis programmes will. very much depend on the accuracy and completeness of the annotation of the genome database. With the integration of bioinformatics advanced genomic tools as well as with a genomics guided breeding programmes progress in improvement of the oil palm can be further expedited.
