Abstract

The results of a laboratory-scale study o fan environmentally friendly water treatment method are presented where the cyanide from gold mine tailing water from Pahang and Terengganu were removed by photocatalytic process. High purity non-crystalline silica was prepared via ion exchange method. Deposition of titanium over the high purity non-crystalline silica was performed by hydrolysis and condensation reaction of JiCI 4. The photocatalytic degradation of cyanide tests were conducted in the presence and absence of the SiD21JiD2 catalyst utilising simulated UV light and natural sunlight as the irradiation sources. The experimental data produced indicate that the photocatalytic degradation of cyanide with the SiD/JiD 2 catalyst using natural sunlight is a promising method for cyanide removal in gold mine tailing water.
