Abstract
The entrepreneur training programme of MARDI was initiated in an informal manner in 1977 to cater for the needs of the food industry. In time the demand and response for more courses increased leading to the structuring of formal courses to cater for the needs of the target groups namely the existing and potential entrepreneurs and extension officers from Government agencies involved in the development of the food industry in Malaysia. This training programme was carried out with the objective of upgrading the technical know-how of the target groups in the field of food processing and quality control. Specialised training were also conducted including collaborative training courses with international bodies such as the United States Food and Drugs Administration USFDA Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations FAO and Technonet Asia. Collaborative efforts with local agencies such as National Productivity Centre NPC MARA and Malaysian Institute of Food Technologists MIFT were also carried out. Under the Fifth Malaysia Plan 1986-1990 altogether 179 scheduled training courses basic and advanced levels were conducted at Serdang Selangor Pasir Puteh Kelantan Bukit Raya Kedah Kuala Terengganu Terengganu and Tampoi/Johor Bahru Johor attended by a total of 4 182 persons belonging to the above target groups. At the same time some 2 377 attended 97 unscheduled training courses held. This paper outlines the courses conducted with emphasis on the types of courses selection of participants and followup programmes for participants who venture into the food processing industry attending the courses held in MARDI.
